Project Scope
For hundreds of years, the Karamojong people of Uganda have terrorized their neighbors, raiding cattle, and killing their owners. In the last 40 years, the Karamojong have acquired guns, which has upped the ante, increasing the violence and the death toll. Thankfully, violence in the area has been decreasing in recent years; however, long standing hurt and prejudice remains. For two years now, CLIDE Consultancy (Community Livestock-Integrated Development Consultancy) has led villages in a community based peace ministry, drawing them to desire to reconcile with one another, and to forgive each other of the past. As part of their expression of this forgiveness and reconciliation, they have committed to living together in the former war zone or No-Man's-Land, which is a fertile zone of prime agricultural land between the two warring factions. This region has been used as a raiding corridor for decades, but now that the people have begun to settle there, they are able to intercept raiding parties and convince them to give up fighting and settle down to working the land with them. Currently, in a place where there were no people two years ago, over 10,000 people have settled and are living and working together in harmony.
CLIDE Consultancy would like to support them in their efforts to live in peace together in this uniquely fertile area of Karamoja. Water and agricultural support are vital to the sustainability of the peace villages and the viability of joint peace initiatives in the region. Currently, people make do with very little water and rely, in part, on trucked deliveries. Therefore, they have asked EMI to evaluate water sources in the area and design potable water systems (combination of springs and boreholes and design irrigation systems (drip systems or other) to improve agricultural productivity in a food-scarce area.
We need an EMI team of engineers to evaluate the water sources, design spring boxes and layout irrigation systems. Would you consider joining the team to provide viable water sources to the people of Karamoja?
